Two Narratives One Cup

McShane — Mon, 05 Oct 2026 19:49:46 GMT

On a rare Sunday matinee, Ray the Wire hosts McShane, Fitz, and Jefe for a full show that starts with beer talk and stories before diving into the week’s main topic: the reported Flydubai FZ1073 Dubai-to-Tel Aviv hijacking, where a co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain with a cockpit axe and passengers—including a plumber—helped land in Saudi Arabia. The crew debates “two narratives” around the event, pointing to inconsistencies (blood imagery, passenger behavior, the reported rapid altitude drop, missing cabin disruption) and contrasting media framing from outlets like CBS versus CNN/New York Times. They discuss timing tied to Israeli politics, antisemitism discourse on X, bots and debunkers muddying the waters, and Trump comments. Secondary topics include a surge of U.S. Navy drone news, AI being rebranded as “super intelligence,” small modular nuclear reactors, a Siberian lab death framed as potential plague, Nick Shirley’s Portland drug interview, and assorted culture/politics commentary.

Press Room Purge, Fake Hawking & Our Baby Girl El Jefé

McShane — Tue, 22 Sep 2026 00:04:15 GMT

Fitz, McShane, and Jefe banter about Fitz injuring himself before the show and joking about hiring a “show fluffer,” then pivot into beer talk, reviewing Lucky Envelope Brewing’s Pumpkin Emoji Spiced Cream Stout and Tin Barn Brewing’s 12% “Six by Six” anniversary quad IPA, later adding KCBC’s Zocktoberfest lager and Deschutes’ port barrel-aged Black Butte 38 imperial porter. They shout out listeners, recommend James Graves’ podcast “How to Survive Teaching, The Zombie Apocalypse and Other Natural Disasters,” and rave about the “Dungeon Crawler Carl” audiobook series and narrator Jeff Hays. The show then dives into a critique of “AI doom” narratives, arguing nonprofits like METR and groups tied to effective altruism are industry-linked, donor-funded, and used as a familiar COVID-era playbook to push regulation, shape media coverage, and seek government liability protection; they highlight claims about media outlets being funded through fellowships and discuss a Netflix-adjacent AI documentary trailer as fear-mongering. They react to Paula White’s tithing appeal as tasteless, celebrate Trump banning CNN, MSNBC, and Politico from the White House press environment while airing commentary from Link Lauren, and cover “troop movement” talk including U.S. space weapons and speculation about rivals. Jefe delivers a farm report on Darwin’s frog males incubating eggs in a vocal sac, and they discuss an Australian 2032 Olympic rowing venue planned on a crocodile-filled river. They dismiss ongoing UFO “disclosure” as noise, then highlight a feel-good segment on Neuralink enabling an ALS patient to communicate “I love you,” using it to contrast hopeful tech with propaganda. They also discuss quantum navigation without GPS and question the Stephen Hawking public narrative, suggesting translation/ghostwriting concerns and connecting skepticism to broader distrust in media and science.

The AI Doc, Center for Humane Technology, and the Coxon week

McShane — Sun, 20 Sep 2026 00:04:55 GMT

The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist did not start as a studio assignment. After the 2023 Oscars for *Everything Everywhere All at Once*, people in the Center for Humane Technology orbit reached out to Daniel Kwan and Jonathan Wang. The pitch was that AI was moving faster than the public could track, and that someone with cultural reach should make a clarifying film. That conversation produced a three-year documentary directed by Daniel Roher (*Navalny*) and Charlie Tyrell, produced by Kwan and Wang (Playgrounds), Shane Boris (Cottage M), Diane Becker (Fishbowl Films), and Ted Tremper. Focus Features acquired worldwide rights in October 2024. The film premiered at Sundance on January 27, 2026, opened theatrically in the United States on March 27, and landed on Netflix US on September 15. Domestic box office was about $1.3 million. Netflix is where the audience scale actually is.

Coordinated U.S. embassy alerts on Middle East aviation risk

McShane — Sat, 19 Sep 2026 22:26:19 GMT

Status: Confirmed from official embassy pages

Assessment: Precautionary, region-wide, not a confirmation of current airspace closures

U.S. diplomatic missions issued a near-identical security alert this evening warning of possible flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions across the Middle East. The wording is coordinated, not country-specific improvisation.

Confirmed official posts, 19 September 2026

• U.S. Embassy Muscat (Oman)

• U.S. Embassy Beirut (Lebanon)

• U.S. Mission Iraq (Baghdad; also lists Erbil, Basrah, Sulaymaniyah)

• U.S. Embassy Manama (Bahrain)

• U.S. Embassy Doha (Qatar)

• U.S. Mission Saudi Arabia

Media also reported a matching Jerusalem alert tonight. The embassy website archive still showed 1 September as the latest tagged notice at the time of review, so treat Jerusalem as reported pending the public page. om.usembassy.gov

What the alerts say
The security environment remains complex, with room for sudden escalation. Travelers should expect possible last-minute schedule changes. The notices also cite Houthi attacks on Saudi targets, including civilian airports, and warn that Iran and aligned groups may strike U.S. diplomatic sites and other U.S.-linked locations, including outside the region. lb.usembassy.gov

What this means
This is a consular readiness message, not an announcement that airspace is closed. Similar language went out in July and on 1–2 September during earlier spikes. Tonight’s batch is a fresh, multi-post refresh after reported Houthi activity against Saudi Arabia. Parallel embassy notices usually precede NOTAMs, reroutes, or short-notice airline changes rather than proving an attack is already underway. newsweek.com

Watch next

• Airline and airport status at Muscat, Beirut, Baghdad/Erbil, Bahrain, Doha, Riyadh/Jeddah, and Ben Gurion

• New or updated NOTAMs over the Gulf, Levant, and Red Sea

• Whether Jerusalem, Amman, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, and other posts publish the same template

• Any local siren, shelter, or air-defense activity that would move this from travel risk to immediate threat

Travelers in or transiting the region should confirm flights directly with carriers, keep documents and comms ready, and follow local authority guidance.

Refinery Capacity Cut

Poocrete

McShane — Thu, 17 Sep 2026 15:15:06 GMT

Well, I saw a story on this and thought it needed to be validated. It’s accurate. It’s happening. Poocrete is real. Maybe they can start with Congress. They’re definitely full of shit.

India’s “poocrete” is not a joke mix. It is treated human waste, turned into biochar, and used to replace a slice of cement. In lab tests from Manipal University Jaipur, the resulting concrete came out stronger than the ordinary mix it was measured against.

Civil engineer Raghuvesh Tiwari and colleagues, working with researchers at Louisiana Tech, took fecal sludge from a treatment plant in Warangal, Telangana. The sludge was dried, heated in a low-oxygen environment at 350–450°C, then ground and sieved into a fine black powder. That powder replaced 5%, 10%, and 15% of ordinary Portland cement in otherwise conventional concrete. The samples were tested for compressive strength, flexural strength, water absorption, porosity, and shrinkage after 28, 56, and 91 days of curing.

The 10% mix produced the numbers that travelled. After 91 days it showed about a 21% increase in compressive strength and a 42% increase in flexural strength versus the control. The 5% mix also beat ordinary concrete, with roughly 20% higher compressive strength and 36% higher flexural strength. At 15%, performance fell. Durability results at the lower doses were competitive or better: less water uptake and porosity in some tests, and shrinkage comparable to ordinary mortar after 120 days. The researchers suggest the porous char acts as a set of tiny water reservoirs that keep hydration going as the concrete ages.

That is why the work matters in India. Cement is one of the world’s largest industrial sources of carbon dioxide, and India is the second-largest cement producer. Housing, metros, highways, and PMAY-style programmes keep pouring demand into the sector. At the same time, fecal sludge remains a live sanitation problem. Treatment plants already exist. Using a processed fraction of that waste as a cement extender turns a disposal stream into a construction input and modestly cuts clinker use.

The paper is cautious. The gains showed up most clearly at later ages. The useful window looks like 5–10% replacement, not “the more waste the better.” This is still laboratory work. Field batches, variable sludge chemistry, codes, long-term exposure, and public acceptance have not been settled. Heavy-metal leaching was reported as reduced with higher biochar content, which is encouraging and not a substitute for full environmental review. Scale would also require consistent, quality-controlled biochar from many plants, not one research lot.

The nickname is catchier than the method. This is not raw sewage in a mixer. It is a high-temperature char from treated sludge, used at modest replacement rates. The science is early. The policy fit is tighter: India already collects the waste and already pours the concrete. If durability and supply chains hold, the first honest uses are the unglamorous ones—pavers, blocks, low-risk components—while longer data accumulate.

The circular-economy pitch writes itself. Whether contractors, regulators, and buyers will accept a material whose feedstock began in a toilet is the part the lab cannot answer.

Razor Wire News (Saturday, Sept. 12, 6:35 PM), Fitz and McShane discuss a major AI “end of the world” narrative sparked by Jacob Coxon resigning from Anthropic and warning that OpenAI and Anthropic are racing toward self-improving superintelligence; they argue the threat is real but the viral rollout appears coordinated, tying it to prior Hugging Face talk, media amplification, Anthropic’s IPO ambitions, Bernie Sanders and Rep. Greg Casar’s Ban Artificial Super Intelligence Act, Bill Gates’ partnership with Anthropic, and concerns that regulation would crush independent developers while rivals like China keep advancing. They debate safety vs. geopolitics, cite a Joe Rogan interview about AI agents “breaking out,” and cover OpenAI’s claimed Navier–Stokes breakthrough and credit disputes. The episode also includes election/vote-buying chatter, algorithm oddities, Hunter Biden’s meme coin, a Tucker Carlson algebra clip, German election reactions, nuclear spaceship mentions, extensive beer tasting, and comic segments about Jefe’s birthday and a gifted “murse,” plus a humorous AI-generated birthday song and a brief “Farm Report” on unusual orchids.

On Labor Day weekend episode of Razor Wire News, McShane and Fitz open with beer banter and off-color merch jokes before diving into the week’s topics: Canadian PM Mark Carney complains that Americans should stop “doing memes,” prompting an avalanche of AI edits and Carney quickly signaling he’s ready to talk trade; he was “memed into submission.” They discuss a juvenile-but-funny White House drop of five retro arcade-style games (including a Tetris-like one) and note Tetris is unhappy about copyright, while arguing border enforcement is still a serious issue. They slam Bernie Sanders’ bill to ban AI as anti-American in an arms-race with China, joking they’d rather face an “American AI terminator” than a Chinese one. Later, they roast the 2026 Socialism Conference in Chicago (2,600 sign-ups), highlight a speaker arguing the left should stop trying to be “fitter than the fascists,” and trace funding to major foundations including Tides, Rockefeller, Ford, and others. They revisit Nepal’s catastrophic flood via meteorologist Chris Martz, rejecting climate-change blame and calling it bedrock collapse and reporting effects, then pivot to UN climate messaging, geomagnetic-field theories, El Niño, a hurricane-less Atlantic, and multiple Indonesian volcanic eruptions around Krakatau. Jefé drops in with a “Farm Report” about the pistol shrimp’s cavitation “shot” (218 dB, extreme heat, flash of light). The episode also detours into the WNBA commissioner “retiring,” Hunter Biden’s “48.6% gay” remark, Ryan Reynolds’ comments about the ’80s while promoting “Mayday,” and a viral video classifying movies by political ideology, before closing with standout beers and a call to think critically.
