EU Sets the Fuel Prices

In March 2026, amid rising energy prices due to the Middle East/Iran conflict, Spain's government approved a €5 billion emergency relief package. This included a temporary cut in VAT on fuels (gasoline and diesel) from 21% to 10%, effective from March 22 to June 30, 2026 (with similar reductions on electricity and natural gas). The goal was to lower prices at the pump by around €0.30 per liter and support households and businesses.
The European Commission sent a formal letter to Spain at the end of March 2026, warning that the fuel VAT reduction violates the EU VAT Directive, which does not allow reduced rates on fuel supplies. Similar warnings were issued to other countries like Poland. The Commission has not imposed immediate fines, but infringement proceedings could follow if the issue is not resolved. Spain is maintaining the measure as temporary and continuing dialogue with Brussels.
This reflects tensions between national crisis responses and EU fiscal rules.
